What is Monitor in Computer

Monitor is the most popular and mostly used output device. It displays all the work done on the computer and images, text, video, and graphics information on its screen. A monitor is also called a Visual Display Unit (VDU). Two technologies are available in monitors, and these are the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) and the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).

A monitor is an electronic output device. A monitor is almost like a Television (TV) but its resolution is much higher than a TV. These days all the monitors are created using flat-panel display technology, commonly backlit with LEDs. These modern monitors take less space on the desk than old CRT display monitors. On 1 March 1973, the first computer monitor was introduced which was part of the Xerox Alto Computer system.

Types of Monitor in Computer

There are different types of monitors, and these are:

1. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Monitors

This technology is used in early monitors. Traditional monitors, display images using cathode ray tube technology. They are huge and heavy and have been mostly replaced by modern technologies. CRT monitor uses a beam of electrons to create an image on the screen. 

2. LED Monitors

LED monitors are similar to LCD monitors but with LED backlighting which improves color accuracy and brightness. LED monitors are energy-efficient and come in a variety of sizes. The LED technology is used in the majority of current monitors.

3. Flat Panel Monitors

Flat Panel Monitors are lightweight take less space on the desk and also consume less power compared to CRT monitors. But these monitors are more expensive than the CRT monitors. Flat Panel Monitors are available in different sizes like 15", 17", 18", 19", and more. The Flat Panel Monitor's display is made with the help of two plates of glass.

4. Touch Screen Monitors

Touchscreen monitors are also the part of input device. Because it allows the users to interact with the computer using a finger, stylus, or mouse and keyboard. Touch Screen Monitors allow the users to interact with the computer system by touching the display. This type of monitor is commonly used in kiosks and point-of-sale systems.

Difference Between LCD and LED Monitor



LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display.

The contrast ratio of LCD monitors is high.

The contrast ratio of LED monitors is low.

LCD monitors mainly use fluorescent lights.

LED monitors mainly use light-emitting diodes.

LCD monitors display are large and take more time to switch.

LED monitors display area is small and takes less time to switch.

LCD monitors have a shorter lifespan compared to LED monitors.

LED monitors have a longer lifespan compared to LCD monitors.

The brightness of LCD monitors is generally lower compared to LED monitors.

The brightness of LED monitors is generally higher compared to LED monitors and produces better visual results.

LCD monitors have limited viewing angles.

LED monitors have wider viewing angles.
